The Frankenmoor is a nature reserve in the communities of Bargstedt and Fredenbeck in the district of Stade . It is the remaining area of an approximately 5000 year old high moor , its current area is about 102 hectares .
The formerly tree-free raised bog has been greatly changed by drainage and peat digging , which means that the majority of the area today consists of birch-pine bog forests that stand on dried-up remains of the peat body. In the former peat cutting areas there are partly peat moss and birch forests . The birch-pine moor forests are interrupted by grassland and coniferous forest areas. Nevertheless, numerous endangered species of birds, amphibians, dragonflies and butterflies have been identified in the Frankenmoor area. The nature reserve bears the official registration number NSG LÜ 215.
