In the north and east it borders on the protected landscape area "Grafeler Holz, Hamerloh and Lintel". The approximately 22 hectare core area of the nature reserve around the Kolke has been under protection since September 15, 1953. In 1975 the nature reserve was expanded to around 440 hectares and on January 1, 2009, it was expanded by another 200 hectares to its current size. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Rotenburg (Wümme) district.

The area drains through several water courses to the Ahauser Bach, a tributary of the Wümme .
Several hiking trails have been running through the nature reserve since September 2010, all of which are circular routes. Themed pavilions can be found in several places where information on the moorland habitat is given. There is an observation tower on one of the paths.
In the southeast of the nature reserve there is a moor experience zone with a nature trail within the nature reserve. Information on the moor habitat can also be found here on several boards and in pavilions.
