The Achim dry sand lawn is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony town of Achim in the Verden district .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 211 is about 57 hectares. It is almost congruent with the FFH area of the same name designated in 2004 . In the south it borders on the protected landscape area "Weser lowlands between the canal mouth at Eissel and Clüverswerder". The area has been a nature reserve since April 2, 1994. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Verden.

Silver grass corridor

The nature reserve, which consists of two partial areas, is located between the Achim districts of Bierden and Uphusen, south of Landesstrasse 158. It consists of the remains of a former inland dune area that stretched along the Weser. Most of the dunes have been removed. The Ellisee, created by dredging , is located in the protected area . On the nutrient-poor, dry sands of the dunes are silver grasslands and sandy grasslands and sand heaths with heather before. The dry sand grassland is one of the few larger, still existing grassland complexes in Lower Saxony. For care, they are temporarily grazed with heather sheep and goats.

Various plant and animal species typical of the site occur in the nature reserve, including hymenoptera, butterflies and grasshoppers that are worth protecting.

Prior use

The former Uphuser Mountains were an extensive area between Uphusen and Bierden, which was characterized by large dunes until the beginning of the 20th century. Before the First World War, the large sand dunes were removed to fill the embankments in Bremen, but numerous smaller dunes remained. Over the years, the heather and shrubbery expanded again.

Until 1944, the area was used by Borgward , based in nearby Bremen- Hastedt, to test the driving characteristics of their military vehicles. After the end of the Second World War, the site lay fallow for a few years , only to be used again by Borgward as a test site until the end of the 1950s. In 1960 another sand mining began not only in the remaining dunes, but also in the depths, u. a. for the expansion of the Bremen Cross and the New Vahr in Bremen.
