The Birkensee is a nature reserve and a lake in it in the Lower Saxon town of Schneverdingen in the Heidekreis district .
location
The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 039 is 37.5 hectares in size. It is located south of Schneverdingen and includes a small raised bog area that has formed in a blow-out basin on the edge of the Neuenkirchen terminal moraine.
description
Within the moor area there is the Birkensee in the south and another moor lake in the north. Both lakes are surrounded by cotton grass and peat moss communities , followed by mixed birch and pine forests. In the northeast of the nature reserve there is a larger area of grassland .
In the south and partly in the north, the nature reserve borders directly on agricultural areas that are located on the rising Geestrücke .
history
The area has been a nature reserve since February 2, 1979. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Heidekreis.
