The black Heidelibelle ( sympetrum danae ) belongs within the vial to the libellulidae (Libellulidae) and is in the genre of darters ( sympetrum classified).

It was named Dragonfly of the Year 2019 by the Society of German-speaking Odonatologists and the BUND in Germany .

features

The black darter reaches an average length of three centimeters with a wingspan of 4.5 to 5.5 centimeters. The abdomen of the males is jet black, that of the females brown-gray with conspicuous black markings. On the chest of both the males and the females, there are deep yellow spots on the sides, and occasionally yellow spots can appear on the black abdomen of the males. Young animals appear yellowish and thus resemble other darter, but can be distinguished from them by dark spots on the chest ( thorax ).

Way of life

The flight time of the black darter is July to September, occasionally until the beginning of November. The animals often sit in sun-exposed places on stones, pieces of wood or simply on the ground and sunbathe.

habitat

You can find this species on swampy lake shores, ponds and moors up to a height of 2000 m above sea level. The black darter is found differently in Europe, Asia and North America, but not in the warm south, but rather in the mountains.

Reproduction

When the eggs are laid, the partners are connected and, like all darter, form a tandem . After the eggs are laid, the eggs hibernate and the larvae do not hatch until the following spring. They are almost always on the surface of the water, especially in the shallow water area near the bank, and develop into dragonflies in the same year.
