The Society of German-Speaking Odonatologists eV (GdO) is a zoological specialist society of dragonfly researchers ( odonatologists ) from Germany and neighboring countries. It was founded in Bonn in 1982 and has been based in Mönchengladbach since 1999 . The society is dedicated to promoting knowledge about dragonflies and protecting native dragonflies.

history

The first meeting of the (not yet founded) society took place in 1979 in Münster with around 50 German-speaking dragonfly researchers from Germany and neighboring countries in the form of a working conference. In 1982 the Society of German-Speaking Odonatologists (GdO) was founded in Bonn and in 1992 it was registered as an association and recognized as a non-profit organization . According to its own information, the number of members is currently (2014) over 620, of which about 70 come from other European countries.

Publications

The first issue of the journal Libellula, which is still published by the Society, appeared in February 1981. It appears twice a year with scientific articles from the field of dragonfly science, preferably original papers on the biology, ecology, distribution and protection of the European dragonfly fauna. The Libellula Supplement appears irregularly as a monograph on a special topic, e.g. the Atlas of the Odonata of the Mediterranean and North Africa as Volume 9, 2009. The Dragonfly News, the Society's newsletter, appears twice a year.

In 2007, the establishment of a distribution atlas of the 81 dragonfly species detected in Germany was launched, which should provide transnational insights into the distribution, ecology and biology of dragonflies from the analysis of the distribution data of all federal states.

Since 2011, the company has been voting for the dragonfly of the year together with the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) . As with comparable campaigns on “ Nature of the Year ”, the representative highlighting a certain species of this group of animals is intended to draw attention to environmental issues and ecological connections.

Regional associations

There are regional state associations in Bremen (Libellengruppe Bremen), Baden-Württemberg (SG Libellen in Baden-Württemberg), Hesse (AK Libellen in Hessen) and North Rhine-Westphalia (AK Libellen NRW).
