Mining Seegraben

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Seegraben mine was the oldest coal mine in Austria . During the day, it extended about two kilometers north of the Leoben Murschleife.

The first coal discoveries took place in 1606, from 1726 onwards the mining was done on a larger scale. The originally three districts were incorporated into the Austrian Alpine Mining Society by 1900 . A high-quality luster coal was funded , which was mostly used in-house in Donawitz and only a small part was sold as house brandy. In Seegraben, the eight-hour day was first introduced in Austria (1889), 30 years before it was legally anchored. The mining was stopped in 1964 due to the exhaustion of the seams. The central conveyor system, the Zahlbruckner Schacht, a landmark of the city visible from afar, was blown up on August 27th of the same year. There is a mining historical hiking trail created in 2002 . The Leoben Chamber of Labor can provide information on this.
