Alain Platel

Alain Platel (born April 9, 1959 in Gent , Belgium ) is a Belgian choreographer and theater director .

Life

Platel began studying performing arts at the age of eleven in Ghent at Marcel Hoste's drama school . He later attended a ballet school. Since 1980, he has created his own choreographies to mix the elements of dance, theater, music and circus. He involves both professional artists and amateurs in his productions.

In 1984, Platel founded his own dance company Les Ballets C de la B (Les Ballets Contemporains de la Belgique), which is dedicated to contemporary dance and has now (2011) an international reputation. In 2003 Platel withdrew from his company and let them create their own pieces. During this time he learned sign language as an additional form of expression . Since 2006 he has been developing new pieces with Les Ballets C de la B. In 2009 the company moved into a new building in Ghent.

Platel worked as an "orthopedic pedagogue " - a Dutch form of special educator who deals with the treatment of people with mental and / or physical impairments and those who are in a difficult learning or educational situation - in a hospital for disabled children in Armentières in the Nord department in France.

Honors

In 2001 Platel received the European Theater Prize for New Realities . In 2004 he was awarded the 3sat Prize . Since 2006 he has been a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin . In 2012 he was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the Artois University in Arras .
