Pereskia marcanoi is a species of plant in the genus Pereskia from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Pereskia marcanoi grows tree-shaped and reaches heights of 4 to 6 meters. The rust-brown, longitudinally fissured trunk has a diameter of up to 30 centimeters. The leaves are sessile. The lanceolate leaf blade is 3.5 to 7 inches long and 0.7 to 2.8 inches wide. The inconspicuous nerve of the leaf blade has up to three lateral nerves. The midrib protrudes from the underside of the leaf. The areoles often form bald, spur-like short shoots . On the branches there are one to six thorns per areole that are 0.6 to 2.1 centimeters long. On the trunk, 10 to 30 spread thorns are formed per areole, which have a length of up to 3 centimeters.

The flowers are single. They are incompletely unisex, but functionally dioecious . The bright, more or less purple-pink flowers reach a diameter of 4 to 7 centimeters. The depressed spherical, light green, glabrous, fleshy fruits have a diameter of 2.5 to 5.5 centimeters and are 2 to 4.5 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pereskia marcanoi is common in the west of the Dominican Republic in semi-deciduous forests at altitudes of about 500 meters.

The first description was in 1992 by Alberto E. Areces-Mallea .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
