Kehdingen (also Kehdinger Land or Land Kehdingen ) describes a landscape in the district of Stade . It is located on the lower reaches of the Elbe , the so-called Niederelbe, in the catchment area of the Oste and Schwinge rivers .

location

"Das Landt Kaidingen" between Land Hadeln (north-west) and the Altes Land (south-east) in the Duchy of Bremen-Verden in Hanover since 1715 around 1720

The land of Kehdingen lies on both sides of the lower east . It is bounded in the west by its Aue tributary , but originally also included the Bülkau and Belum parishes to the west of this river . In the northeast it meets the Niederelbe , and in the southeast it extends to the Schwinge , which flows through Stade and flows into the Elbe at Stadersand. Kehdingen is assigned to three Elbe islands, namely Krautsand , Gauensieker Sand and Asseler Sand .

landscape

The landscape of Kehdingen is determined by marshland and moorland . In the course of history, this has given rise to a strongly agrarian regional character. The landscape genesis of the Elbe glacial valley was also decisive for this. Today the area is partly below sea level due to dike measures. But it is still an important resting place for migratory birds . In many areas the outer dyke lands were placed under nature protection, e.g. B. in the area between Freiburg harbor priel and the mouth of the Süderelbe into the main stream.

history

Until 1932 there was the Prussian district of Kehdingen with the main town Freiburg / Elbe .

The north of Kehdingen merged to form a joint municipality in 1971 (see Samtgemeinde Nordkehdingen ).

In 1975, the Evangelical Lutheran church district of Kehdingen, based in Drochtersen, was joined to the church district of Stade on January 1, 1976 .

economy

The economic structure is largely shaped by agriculture. This applies above all to the high-yield marshland areas in the Balje, Krummendeich and Freiburg / Elbe areas. The local former outer dike lands were finally made completely safe from tides and storm surges through the construction of a new outer dike line on the edge of the river bed in the 1970s. Agricultural production predominates here . The dairy industry has also established itself in the older marshland areas . Some companies have, like in the neighboring Altes Land , the fruit-growing specialized. Horse breeding is also practiced in Kehdingen ( Hanoverian (horse) ).

For a long time, the brick industry was characteristic of the region on the Lower Elbe. The historical dominance is largely explained by the proximity to the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg , which already led to high demand in the second half of the 19th century. In the years after the Second World War, the demand for clinker and other brick products rose sharply due to the building of houses in the destroyed city. Today only a few companies still pursue this trade.

In terms of tourism, Kehdingen tries to profile itself together with the neighboring Ostemarsch as "Krimiland". A three-digit number of crime novels and crime scripts have been written around Deutsche Krimi-Straße ; Kehdingen is also the setting for many detective novels. In addition, ecotourism is playing an increasingly important role. Tourist tours with the Vogelkieker and the Moorkieker are offered. In addition, wild goose days have been held every year since 2005.

An industrial orientation of the economic structure has only taken place in the Stade area. The district of Bützfleth in Stad is still home to a chemical factory owned by Dow Chemicals Germany . In the 1970s and 1980s there was also a VAW aluminum plant here .

The "Kehdinger Stadion", home ground of the regional soccer division SV Drochtersen / Assel , was derived from the name of the landscape. It is located in Drochtersen and has 3,000 places.
