Hunt the Wumpus is an early text-based computer game by Gregory Yob from 1972. The (or) Wumpus is a fictional monster that lives in a labyrinth of caves and passages. The player must navigate through the trapped caves in text mode and try to hunt down the wumpus by selecting a handful of options before it eats it itself. Unfortunately, besides the wumpus, there is a bottomless hole and bats teleporting the player.

Wumpus has been programmed and implemented on many systems. Among other things, it is part of the BSD games for UNIX and Linux .

In 1981 Texas Instruments released a graphical version for its Texas Instruments TI-99 / 4A home computer , which is still available today as a clone on the Internet. As early as 1977 there was a graphical version that ran on the Telefunken TR 440 mainframe , written in LISP ; The SIG 100 vector graphics terminal was used for the display.

The game was originally developed at the University of Massachusetts . Ken Thompson later wrote a text version again, which is why he is sometimes incorrectly named as the inventor.
