Pompton River in the Passaic River basin

The Pompton River is a nearly 11 km long tributary of the Passaics in the north of the US state New Jersey .

It arises south of the parish of Pompton Lakes through the confluence of the Ramapo River and the Pequannock River . The Pompton River flows south between Lincoln Park and Pequannock Township (to the west) and Wayne (to the east). It flows into the Passaic north of Fairfield . The catchment area includes the Ramapo Mountains on the New York-New Jersey border in the rural suburbs of New York City. In terms of amount of water, it is the most important tributary of the Passaic River. Some of the river water is diverted to the Wanaque Reservoir .
