Kick Off is a documentary about the Austrian national homeless team on their way to the Homeless World Cup in Melbourne , Australia in December 2008 .

action

Kick Off tells the story of Orhan, Hansi and Serkan. You are part of the eight-person team that was put together by team boss Gilbert Prilasnig to represent Austria at the Soccer World Cup for homeless people, asylum seekers and former alcohol and drug addicts, the Homeless World Cup .

The film team, around director Hüseyin Tabak, accompanies you and your five teammates both in preparation for the tournament in Australia and in coping with everyday life. The viewer gets to know the life situations of the three protagonists, learns about their eventful past and participates in the joint team training under the professional guidance of Prilasnig. In the last third of the film, the focus shifts to the world championship in the heart of Melbourne and the focus shifts increasingly to the sporting and group dynamic aspect of the tournament.

style

Kick Off is a film whose plot is driven by conversations with the protagonists. However, the conversational situations are not held in the style of classic interviews, but are more comparable to narratives by the main characters. Visually, calm and clearly designed images are used. As a result, Kick Off differs both in terms of content and design from thematically comparable television formats. The dramaturgical framework results from the Homeless World Cup , which runs like a red thread through the whole film and ultimately contributes to the tense end of the tournament itself.

people

  • Orhan Yildirim, 28, spent most of his youth on the streets of Vienna, torn between his family and addiction to drugs. Through a successful withdrawal and the help of friends and family, he got his life back under control.
  • Johann “Hansi” Kovacs, 41, made it through under bridges and in discarded train wagons for many years of his life as a severely alcohol-dependent homeless person. Only the birth of his daughter allows him to recognize new priorities and releases the necessary energy in him to change his life and be a good father to his daughter.
  • As a teenager, Serkan Yavuz, 31, tried to use petty crime to give himself the financial freedom that was denied him in the 35 m² apartment in which he grew up with his parents and four siblings. The consequences were imprisonment and his parents' attempt to force him back on the right path through forced marriage. But Serkan actually strives for his independence and takes the first important steps in the necessary direction while filming.
  • Gilbert Prilasnig , 36, has been the honorary team leader of the Austrian Homeless World Cup team since 2004. He was a professional soccer player himself, took part in the Champions League three times with SK Sturm Graz and played sixteen times for the Austrian national team.

Quotes

“When someone is on the street or a drug addict, that is, they are very deep. Then how is he supposed to see that he's a winner? Somebody from the bottom up, he can't call himself up on his own. Thank god I was helped. But I also looked for help. You also have to search, you also have to want to. "

- Orhan

“I really want that, I really want to tear something there. This is probably my farewell to sport. [...] I've never flown in an airplane, I've never been able to afford that. It didn't go that far in my life. Always fighting for bare survival, from one day to the next, I can't afford a plane. "

- Hansi

“Who are you playing against?” “Against the rest of the world, man! We are the Austrian national team! "

- Serkan

Reviews

The film was received positively by the press when it was released.

“Are we glad that this film exists. So much could have been done wrong here. Moralize, bring on-the-scene demonstration effects into play. But no: This film does everything right and we are excited for the protagonists until the last second. "

- Tele - The Austrian television magazine

"Kick Off succeeds in the trick that people really open up in front of the camera, and the fourth wall literally disappears, so that the viewer sees himself as a conversation partner of the protagonists."

- Michael Föls : Filmring.at

"Kick Off is anything but a dreary social drama, more of a feel-good film about people who, with the help of football, fight their way up from the bottom up. [...] Despite the tragic stories, one can laugh a lot in the cinema - not about, but with the players. This alliance is one of the film's strengths. "

- Kronen newspaper

"In any case, many viewers are to be wished for the successful documentary."

- Tyrolean daily newspaper
