Mehmet Aktaş

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mehmet Aktaş (* 1966 in Iğdır , Turkey ) is a Kurdish documentary filmmaker , author , journalist and film producer from Turkey . In Germany he is the founder and managing director of mîtosfilm film production and distribution in Berlin .

Life

Aktaş came to West Germany in the mid-1990s after studying at the Istanbul Faculty of Law. Here he was astonished at the neglect of artistic Middle East cinema, especially Kurdish, both by German institutions and by the population. In 2002 he therefore founded the first Kurdish film festival in Germany, which is now funded by the Capital City Culture Fund.

With mîtosfilm, Mehmet Aktaş has produced feature films such as Après La Chute by Hiner Saleem (2009), Land of Legend by Rahim Zabihi (2008) and Close Up Kurdistan (2007) by Yüksel Yavuz . In 2009 Mehmet Aktaş achieved success as a producer with Bahman Ghobadi's feature film No One Knows About Persian Cats , which was awarded the Un Certain Regard prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The 2013 co-produced feature film Before Snowfall received the award for the best Nordic film at the Göteborg Film Festival, as well as the award for the best Arab film (New Horizon) at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival. The special award of the jury of the Int. The Mannheim-Heidelberg Film Festival got the main actor Taher Abdullah Taher.

Another feature film cooperation with Hisham Zaman Letter To The King , in which Mehmet Aktaş worked as a screenwriter, has already been concluded . This film celebrated its world premiere at the Tromsö International Film Festival (2014).

Memories on Stone (2014) by Shawkat Amin Korki, for whom Aktaş both wrote and produced the screenplay, has won numerous awards at international film festivals. Including “Best Film of the Arab World” at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, “Best Film” at the 52nd Antalya International Film Festival, and the “Unesco Prize” at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. Iraq chose Memories on Stone as its official Oscar nominee.

Since 2004, Mehmet Aktaş has been producing mîtosfilm with his self-founded film distributor, with a focus on young Turkish, Kurdish, Iraqi and Iranian auteur cinema, etc. a. Films like Min dît (2010), Süt (2008), Turtles Can Fly (2004) and Two Girls from Istanbul (2005) are in German cinemas. In doing so, he is also pursuing political goals: in his opinion, many of these films are able to paint a more authentic picture of life in the Middle East than the local news can.

From 2011 to 2015 Mehmet Aktaş was also artistic director of the Duhok International Film Festival.
