Turtles can fly (Original title:لاک‌پشت‌ها هم پرواز می‌کنند Lakposchtha ham parwaz mikonand ) is a film by the Iranian - Kurdish director Bahman Ghobadi from 2004. It was shot partly in Iran and partly in the autonomous region of Kurdistan .

action

The events of the film take place on the border between the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan and Turkey in a refugee camp in 2003 . A desperate situation prevails among the Kurdish refugees and they are following the CNN news on satellite television to find out about the impending war. The only one who seems to get the news is a 13-year-old boy named satellite. Although he only pretends to speak English , this gives him a high status among refugees. He is the leader of a group of children who are searching the surrounding area for Iraqi mines as they bring in money. He soon met a girl named Agrin, who arrived at the camp with her mutilated brother and a blind two-year-old. He falls in love with her and tries to get through to her, which he finds difficult due to her trauma. It turns out that the two-year-old is Agrin's child, who she had after she was raped by soldiers. After unsuccessful attempts, the traumatized girl succeeds in killing the child. She then commits suicide. After all, “satellite” can no longer be happy about the invasion of the Americans .

Reviews

“Turtles Can Fly provides a unique perspective on war. The film immediately succeeds in capturing the emotional chaos of the children who, on the one hand, are almost looking forward to the war, as it will fundamentally change their lives, perhaps even improve them and, on the other hand, are filled with the fear that tomorrow "it could all be over". “For no moment does Bahman Ghobadi ('The Time of the Drunken Horses') cast doubt in his drama that there will be no happy ending for these war-disabled children. They are marked by scars on their body and soul, even if they seem to have found a way to live with all the violence and constant threat around them. Ghobadi shows how the children defuse the mines at the risk of their lives. Mines that will only end up in the same fields again via the black market. Shocking and realistic drama. "
