occupation

Two Girls from Istanbul is a Turkish film from 2005 by Kutluğ Ataman with Vildan Atasever , Hülya Avşar and Feride Çetin in the leading roles. It is based on the novel "Two Girls - Istanbul Story" by Perihan Mağden .

action

One day, eighteen-year-old Handan meets Behiye, who is the same age but very different. Both are looking for freedom, but while Behiye mainly flees from her conservative family and her tyrannical brother, Handan is more life-affirming and wants to leave her extroverted mother. She persuades Behiye to travel with her to Australia, where she suspects her actual father. Handan experiences her first time with Erim, who then despises her. Both fall back into the traditional role models of Turkish society, but Handan actually goes to Australia, but leaves Behiye, who saw her as a friend, acting selfishly with her family.

Awards

  • The director received a Golden Tulip at the International Istanbul Film Festival 2006.
  • At the Antalya Film Festival the director, the cameraman and the actress Vildan Atasever were awarded a Golden Orange.

Reviews

  • The film shows the problems of modern Istanbul: the clash of tradition and modernity .
  • Here, too, ataman is very far-sighted, despite all the emotional closeness: It is not just the others who cause opportunities to be missed. This hint should have arrived in Turkey, which is one of the reasons for the many prices.
  • Powerful and sexy coming-of-age double portrait of Kutlug Ataman. Fortunately, his film based on a successful novel is not a "problem film" and pleasantly free of clichés.
