Niels Peter Juel Larsen (* 1942 in Frederikshavn , Denmark ) is a Danish author , journalist and radio maker. He was employed by the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) for almost two decades and is an author and producer of various radio features . He has lived in Berlin as a freelance writer since 1985.

Career

Niels Peter Juel Larsen is the son of Poul Larsen (1912–1945), trainee lawyer with the Danish police, and Karen Louise Larsen (1914–2012). Larsen studied literature (1968) and worked from 1968 to 1985 as an editor for the Danish Broadcasting Corporation ( Danmarks Radio ) with a focus on radio features. It received awards for many of its features. Døden i bjergene on the struggles in the revolutionary years of Nicaragua was awarded the Prix Italia in 1978 , Fremmed i Danmark was awarded the Prix Futura (since 1997 Prix Europa ) for Turkish guest workers in 1983 , as was the radio feature Rejsen til iskanten in 1985about a dog sledding expedition to the Uummannaq Fjord in Greenland . In 1973 he was awarded the Kryger Prize for his work.

Niels Peter Juel Larsen's breakthrough came in the 1970s as a radio maker. In 1985 he moved to Berlin to devote himself to journalistic and, increasingly, to writing. He worked as a freelancer in the feature department of Sender Free Berlin (merged with RBB in 2003 ) and other broadcasters. He wrote articles for the magazines GEO , Die Zeit as well as for the Danish newspapers Politiken , Weekendavisen . He has also taught radio production and features, including in China, Norway and Finland. In 2007 he also organized an exhibition entitled In the Beginning Was the Ear in the Literaturhaus in Copenhagen to draw attention to the art form of the radio feature. He was a member of the Danish Art Council's Literature Advisory Board from 2007 to 2011.

Since 1990 he has concentrated on writing books. His works are mostly strongly autobiographical and shaped by his way of working as a documentary author of features. Thanks to the works Mands liv, mands ære (1998), Hos de døde (2000), Alicia (2011) and Krigens barn (2018), it has become an integral part of the Danish literary canon. His works revolve around the death of his father as a resistance fighter in the Second World War by the German Wehrmacht . At the center of his literary work is the question of the effects of war and the ability to live and love as a traumatized person.

He has also written historical novels ( Røverens time , 1995; Verdens undergang , 1997). The latter was published by dtv in 2002 under the title Die Straße nach Jerusalem and was reissued as an e-book by dotbooks in 2014 under the title Der Untergang der Welt . A number of other works are available in German as e-books. The works were translated by Sigrid Engeler and Heinz Kulas , among others .

criticism

His books are highly regarded in literary criticism in Denmark. The daily Politiken , Denmark's leading daily newspaper, wrote about The Downfall of the World (1987): "Broadly laid out, multifaceted and colorful like a tapestry, in short, cruel in detail like a telegram from the Middle East today."

Mands liv, mands ære (1998) was recognized by the newspaper Information as “a great book by an author with enormous potential and incredible talent”. Politiken called it a "welcome and important book."

The novel Bei den Toten (2000), which deals with the search for traces of the Gestapo killers of his father, was published by the daily Informations as an “incredibly topical novel. [...] An important book! "

The Danish internet newspaper Kristeligt Dagblad praised Krigens Barn (2018): “As compelling as the fire in which it was forged. A book without blinkers. Niels Peter Juels Larsen has invested everything . An upsetting and gripping read. ”The Danish author and colleague Ulrik Græs said: Your best novel so far - I'm completely blown away, it's damn good, painful, linguistically and dramatically. The good Lord has given you a masterful novel. "

His publisher Ulrik Schwab summed up his work with the words: “I am convinced that his authorship is unique - he is the Danish author who, with uncompromisingness, consistency and the greatest artistic strength, visualises and processes the Danish war trauma. "
