Your beauty is worthless is an Austrian feature film from 2012 that deals with the topic of migration and integration from the perspective of a twelve-year-old. At the same time it is the thesis of director Hüseyin Tabak at the Vienna Film Academy .

Veysel has not lived long in Vienna with his family . He goes to school in a reception class and hardly speaks any German. The twelve-year-old boy of Turkish-Kurdish origin experiences his first great love in contemporary Vienna. At the same time, the boy has to watch his family break up under the circumstances (threatened with expulsion, conflicts and breaking off contact with the older, delinquent son, an unsolved father-son conflict and the sentimental glorification of the father's underground activities in Kurdistan ). The speechlessness of the child of political refugees is overcome when the boy learns the poem "Your beauty is worthless" - a work of its namesake, Âşık Veysel - in German and recites it in front of the class in order to impress the girl Ana, also with an immigrant story.

Your beauty is worthless is the first feature film by director Hüseyin Tabak, which is a theatrical film and was based on his own script. The film was produced by Dor Film in collaboration with Tabak's training center, the Vienna Film Academy. Your beauty is worth nothing was premiered on July 1st, 2012 at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Subsequently shown at over 50 festivals, it ran in April 2013 in Austria, in May 2013 in Turkey and one year later in Germany.
In Austria the film is distributed by Filmladen , in Germany by Barnsteiner-Film .
criticism
The Süddeutsche Zeitung diagnosed an "interesting tension (...) between the romantic, idyllic daydreams of Veysel and the oppressive reality", the narrative creates a "heartfelt quality". Stephen Farber of the Hollywood Reporter called the film "a beautiful coming-of-age story devoid of any cliché", with an "haunting atmosphere" and "unnoticeable transitions from dream sequences and real life". The film "lives mainly from its young actor", wrote José García for textezumfilm.de.
Awards
The film won six awards at the Antalya Altın Portakal Film Festivali 2012 ( Antalya Film Festival , Turkish Film Prize), including best film, best screenplay and best leading actor. At the Austrian Film Awards 2014 , he was awarded in the categories of Best Feature Film , Best Director , Best Screenplay and Best Music . Tabak also won several awards as a director and screenwriter for the film.
