The Faule Wiesen nature reserve near Bernau

The Faule Wiesen nature reserve near Bernau is located on the territory of Schönow , a district of the city of Bernau near Berlin ( Barnim district , Brandenburg ), and the Zepernick district , which is part of the Panketal community . The area covers around 37 hectares and was placed under protection on April 3, 2000 by ordinance of the Brandenburg Ministry of Agriculture, Environmental Protection and Regional Planning.

location

The nature reserve extends over a length of about one kilometer on both sides of the Panke . It is bordered in the north by the settlement area of Schönow, a district of the city of Bernau near Berlin, in the south by the route of the Berlin – Szczecin railway line and in the west by the settlement area of the district of Zepernick, which belongs to the municipality of Panketal. The streets An der Panke , Weidenweg , Karvendelweg and Waldstraße , which belong to the Schönow district, run directly on the northern and northeastern edge of the nature reserve . In addition, several footpaths cross the nature reserve, including a heavily frequented connecting path between Zepernick and Schönow.

The nature reserve is an important part of a transnational biotope network system along the Panke in the settlement area of the northern outskirts of Berlin, which also includes the nature reserves Ausstichgelände Röntgengental , Mittelbruch (Berlin-Buch) , Bogenseekette and Lietzengrabenniederung as well as the Karower ponds .

Protection purpose

The protection was placed with the aim of preserving and developing the extensively used wetland complex and the small bodies of water embedded in it in the catchment area of the Panke as a habitat for endangered animal and plant species, in particular various amphibian, bird and orchid species. Also included in the protection were various green areas bordering the disturbance-sensitive wetlands, which play an important role as a buffer zone to the neighboring settlement areas.

The sandy dry grassland and dry oak forest communities of the Priesterwald in the north-western part of the area with their biotope characteristics and species composition typical of the location were also placed under protection.

Ensuring protection

The close proximity of the nature reserve to the Schönow and Zepernick settlement areas and the free accessibility mean that there is repeated illegal disposal of household and garden waste, especially along the footpaths through the area. Regularly carried out clean-up actions by Naturefriends counteract this, but need to be supplemented by preventive measures and constant controls by the responsible authorities.
