The nature reserve Schönerlinder Teiche is 40.76  hectares and is located on the outskirts of Berlin in the district of Mühlenbeck in the Oberhavel district . The ponds are about 300 meters away from the Mühlenbeck-Mönchmühle S-Bahn station .

history

The ponds were created in 1908 as a trickle of Berlin sewage . The many small ponds in the middle of the sewage fields were partly used for carp and duck farming until 1977 . Since then, the ponds lay fallow and were left to their own devices.

In the mid-1980s, a sewage treatment plant was put into operation in Schönerlinde ; then the sewage fields were no longer needed and the ponds silted up. Since the ponds are a bit out of the way, they were barely noticed by the public in the decades that followed. Therefore, rare plants and endangered animal species could settle there undisturbed. In 1997 the area was placed under nature protection. A walkable path was built around the ponds and a wooden observation tower was built. After the tower was burned down by strangers, it was renovated in 2010 - financed by the Berlin City Assets , which also owns the space.

Dandelion path

March 31, 2010 was the 30th anniversary of the ZDF telecast dandelion together with the Association of German Nature Parks a four-kilometer-long adventure trail, called Dandelion path opened. On this circular route, primarily for Berlin and Brandenburg elementary school children, there are adventure offers on the subjects of bees, grazing with water buffalo and Konik horses , adventure hedge and the observation tower for water bird watching . It is the only nature trail in Germany that has a S-Bahn connection.

Another special feature is the "Treasure of the Barnim Nature Park" hidden on the circular path as a geocaching point .

fauna

In 2009 biodiversity following was the day fauna spotted: Reed Bunting , Reed Warbler , Reed Warbler , Black Kite , Goldammer , backed Shrike , Whinchat and little grebe .
