history

The Harenzacken forest area on a measurement table from the Prussian first recording from 1825

The Harenzacken was formerly the hunting area of the von Werthern family based at Hoppenrade Castle . It was expropriated and divided as part of the land reform in the Soviet occupation zone from 1945 . During the time of the German Democratic Republic it was used by the State Forestry Company. In 1990 an application was made to put the Harenzacken under protection. The designation as a nature reserve finally took place in 2003. In the same year 160 hectares of the area were transferred from the Federal Republic of Germany to the Green League for near-natural management.

The nature reserve is part of the European bird sanctuary Obere Havel lowlands .
