The Stechlin nature reserve is a nature reserve of 86.58 km² in the north of the state of Brandenburg . It encompasses an uncut forest and lake area with over 30 lakes in the natural area of the Neustrelitz Kleinseenland . The protection purpose is, among other things, the preservation of nine rare, nutrient-poor clear water lakes , including the eponymous Große Stechlinsee and the Roofensee . In addition, near-natural, extensive beech and oak forests and a high population of ospreys are typical of the nature reserve.
The nature reserve was set up on May 6, 1938 under the name "Großer Stechlin, Nehmitzsee and Großer Krukowsee" on an area of 17.74 km² and later expanded. The current Protection Ordinance was issued on November 15, 2002. The Stechlin nature reserve extends over areas of the city of Fürstenberg / Havel and the municipality of Stechlin in the Oberhavel district and the city of Rheinsberg in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district . It forms part of the Stechlin-Ruppiner Land nature park and is designated as an FFH area and a European bird sanctuary .
