Lucas (film festival)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lucas (own spelling: LUCAS ) is a German film festival for current, international children's and youth film productions that takes place annually in Frankfurt am Main , Offenbach am Main and Wiesbaden . The program is aimed at a young audience from four years to 18+. The focus is on encounters with filmmakers from all over the world, who will answer questions from children and young people in film talks. It was founded in 1975, making it the oldest German film festival for a young audience. In 2016 the festival was redesigned and named LUCAS - International Festival for Young Film Fans .

Festival and competition

Innovations were the expansion of the target group to include teenagers and young adults as well as the increased focus on the active participation of young cineastes in the festival. In order to give the opinion of the children and young people sufficient weight at the festival, not only adult experts have been on the jury since 1985 , but also children and young people who have an equal say in the award of the LUCAS prizes.

Various juries evaluate the LUCAS competition program and award the prizes: In the sections from 8 years of age and from 13 years of age, the best full-length film (endowed with 5000 €) and the best short film (endowed with 2000 €) will be awarded. In addition, in the section from 13 years of age, a full-length film will be honored with the prize for an "exceptional cinematic achievement" (endowed with 2000 €).

LUCAS visitors have been involved in decision-making since 1995 and can choose their most popular film with the LUCAS Audience Award.

In addition, a jury awards a prize from the European Children's Film Association (ECFA) to the best European children's and youth film in the section from 8 years of age.

Since the redesign in 2016, children and young people have curated their own film programs and moderated film talks with international guests. When selecting the films, the management of the festival focuses on quality and does not only want to show premieres and films specially marked as suitable for the target group. In the new section of the Young European Cinephiles , film-savvy young people from all over Europe determine the evening program of the festival themselves.

LUCAS is a central platform for film educators and film educators and organizes specialist conferences accompanying the festival, such as the future workshop "Film, Escape and Interculture" (2016) or the specialist day "Film educates!" of the Society for Media Education and Communication (2017).
