occupation

Jongens ( Dutch for “boys”) is a Dutch film by the director Mischa Kamp from 2014. Originally produced for television, it was subsequently brought to the cinema.

action

The 15-year-old winner recently lost his mother and now lives with his older brother Eddy with his father. While the rebellious Eddy, who works in a sawmill , keeps causing his father problems, Sieger is a rather reserved boy, but a fanatical athlete who spends most of his time on the track. His coach finally suggests that he and his best friend Stef join the athletics club's B team and train for an athletics championship. There are two more boys in the team and the winner becomes friends with the slightly older Marc. The four train a lot together and also meet often in the remaining free time. When they go swimming in a pond and Sieger and Marc stay behind in the evening, the two boys kiss. Afterwards, Sieger emphasizes, confused, that he is not gay. The relationship between the two friends and teammates becomes complicated as a result.

Stef has since started a relationship with Kim, whose friend Jessica is very interested in Sieger. Eddy bought a motorcycle without his father's knowledge and secretly organizes motocross races in the forest with his friends . Stef and Sieger often stay there too. Marc, meanwhile, makes no secret of his deeper feelings for winners and this one comes closer to him again during a training camp. But when one day Jessica Sieger kisses in front of Marc, Marc is deeply hurt. The boys are becoming increasingly alienated. This also jeopardizes the championship, where the winner of the relay race is supposed to take over from Marc.

Sieger feels guilty about his behavior towards Marc and has to admit that he actually loves him. When the team wins the relay race at the championship, winner Marc can finally win back.

background

Director Mischa Kamp wanted to tell a love story the likes of which had never been seen on Dutch television, so she decided on the love between two boys. The decision to put the film on the career track was due to budgetary reasons : Since fewer extras were required for a track and field team than, for example, for a football team, the film could be made cheaper. Kamp emphasized that the film had also been made especially for younger people and therefore did not contain any explicit actions. Nevertheless, it was difficult for the main actors to get involved in the intimate scenes, which is why the director tried to bring the boys closer to each other outside of the shooting time and so take away their shyness. In addition, the kissing scenes were only filmed on the last day.

Jongens was initially produced for Dutch television and first broadcast on February 9, 2014 on the children's channel Zapp . After positive reactions from the audience and critics, the distributor Cinemien decided to post the film on May 6th in fourteen selected cinemas. The rights were then sold to the United States , the United Kingdom , Taiwan , Poland , France and Germany (on loan from Edition Salzgeber ). The film was shown at the Seattle International Film Festival , the Vancouver Queer Film Festival , the Atlanta Out-on-Film Festival and the Frameline Film Festival , among others .

As part of the Gay Film Night in January 2015, the film was shown for the first time as the original with German subtitles in selected German cinemas; the DVD release followed on February 3, 2015.

reception

In de Volkskrant , Kevin Toma judged in the run-up to the first broadcast that Kamp knew how to hit the protagonist's “inner restlessness” “nicely without being too thick”. He criticized the film but as "a little too good"; In the end, it is "no longer credible with these deeply in love teenagers that it is just kissing and holding hands".

Boyd van Hoeij reviewed the film in the Hollywood Reporter and came to the conclusion: “Strong acting performances and an admirably laid-back script characterize this mixture of sports film and coming-out story.” He called the film “intimate and touching”, “good-looking and played well ”. Although he complained that the film “did not offer any particularly surprising twists”, the director admitted to moving the audience with the “beautifully portrayed” “story of a first love that is more complicated than most”. He particularly emphasized the "unexpectedly filmed from a bird's eye view" kiss scene in the pond, which was "both aesthetically beneficial and symbolic", "since teenagers kissing from above could belong to any gender". He also praised the soundtrack, which managed to "hint at Sieger's agitated vortex of inner surges of emotion without ever becoming depressing or melancholy".

Monica Meijer judged on Cinemagazine that Jongens was at first glance a “nice youth film”, the focus of which was “insecure adolescents”. But “the recognizable theme of first love and its credible elaboration” make the film “a pleasant use of time” for adults too. The feelings of the main characters are "absolutely sincere", the camera work is "beautiful and inventive". The director gives the audience "enough clues to get their own imagination going". Meijer awarded four stars out of five.

Chris Keech, a Frameline Film Festival reviewer , said the director managed to capture “all those subtle nuances that defined first encounters with physical attraction and desire” and that the film would become “a universal story in her capable hands the innocent wonder, agitation, fear and insecurity of a first love ”. Jongens is "refreshing in that most of the tension comes from Sieger's inner struggle, not from some disapproving voice around him."

Awards

The film won four prizes at the Zlín Youth Film Festival in the Czech Republic in 2014:

  • Ecumenical Jury Prize
  • Audience Award “Golden Apple” for the best feature film
  • Miloš Macourek Award for the best young actor in a youth film to Gijs Blom

Hollywood Reporter, May 5, 2014, accessed September 12, 2014 : “Strong performances and an admirably loose-limbed screenplay elevate this mixture of sports movie and coming-out narrative. … In her intimate and touching feature… this good-looking and well-acted film… The boys' subsequent horsing around ends in a tender smooch in the water that Kamp and cinematographer Melle van Essen capture in an unexpected overhead shot that's both esthetically pleasing and laden with symbolic meaning, as seen from above, the two kissing teenagers could be of any sex. ... Since the film combines sports-movie tropes with a traditional coming-out narrative, there's little in terms of plot twists that will shock even the most casual moviegoer. But clearly, Kamp's intention is not to surprise but rather to move the viewer with her depiction of a first love that's more confusing than most but that's beautifully mapped out here. ...
