action

Yacine lives with his ten-year-old son Ziad in the Palestinian village of Qalqiliya near the wall that separates the city from Israel. He is a veterinarian in the only zoo in Palestine that has a lack of money and medicine. Ziad's greatest passion is the pair of giraffes Rita and Brownie, which he cares for and feeds every day. French photo reporter Laura is injured in the eyes during a demonstration against the Israeli security forces. Yacine brings her to safety and treats her injury. Both find pleasure in each other. After a birthday party for the zoo director Marwan, Qalqiliya is attacked by the Israeli air force , killing the bull giraffe Brownie. The female giraffe, Rita, then refuses to eat, putting her life in danger. Ziad falls into great sadness. After an argument with his father, he runs away. Yacine tries to find his son again, ignoring the curfew, whereupon he is detained and harassed by Israeli soldiers. Finally he finds Ziad at the street vendor Hassan's. When Yacine discovers that Rita is pregnant, he makes a plan. He wants to steal a bull giraffe from Israel. To do this, he turns to his friend Yoav, who is a veterinarian in the Ramat Gan Safari Park near Tel Aviv. He weighs down at first, but is then ready to help Yacine. Hidden in the reporter Laura's car, Yacine and Ziad pass the checkpoint to Israel. Once at the safari park, the choice falls on the giraffe bull Romeo, who is to be brought out of the zoo and then out of the country with the help of a trailer provided by Yoav. Yacine, Laura and Ziad drive country roads to evade the controls. After two days they run out of gas in the mountains. While Yacine and Laura go into the valley to get gasoline, Ziad remains alone in the car. A short time later, an Israeli settler arrives and threatens him. Yacine and Laura come back just in time to evict the settler. They continue to a checkpoint that Laura suspected was open. To their disappointment, they discover that this is not the case. They then decide to walk the rest of the way to Qalqiliya with the giraffe. At the end of their goal, Rita and Romeo succeed in reuniting, but Yacine is arrested by the Israeli soldiers while his son is left alone.

background

Giraffada is based on a newspaper article from 2003 according to which a giraffe was actually killed in an Israeli air raid in a Palestinian zoo. This animal was stuffed and exhibited in 2007 by the artist Peter Friedl at documenta 12 in Kassel . The film marks the directorial debut of Rani Massalha. The shooting took place in Nablus for organizational reasons .

Awards

At the Buster Film Festival in Copenhagen in 2014, Xavier Nemo received the award for best screenplay. At the Lucas Film Festival in Frankfurt am Main , Ahmed Bayatra was awarded the Actor Award in the same year.

Reviews

Giraffada received mixed reviews. The Nürnberger Nachrichten wrote more negatively:

"Clearly overwhelmed, director Massalha, who initially only wanted to take care of the production, gives away great opportunities to lend his story dramatic dynamics over and over again."

The magazine epd Film , however, has words of praise:

"Giraffada is a film in which everyday life is so dramatic that it doesn't need a story to make it worth seeing."
