Preselection and introduction of a new category
The preselection for the documentary section with 15 films was announced on December 16, 2019. The announcement of the pre-selections for the areas of feature film with 27 films and children's film with 8 films took place on January 7, 2020. This concluded the first stage of the three-stage election process. The 2000 members of the German Film Academy viewed the pre-selected films and voted on the nominations by mid-March 2020. The nominations were announced on March 11, 2020.
For the first time in 2020, a Lola was also awarded in the Best Visual Effects and Animation category. Like most of the individual performance categories, this prize is endowed with 10,000 euros.
Change of the event concept
As in previous years, the award ceremony was also planned as a gala event with an audience and was originally intended to be broadcast on television by ARD with a delay. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a ban on contact in Germany, a change in the concept was announced just under three weeks before the event. The award ceremony was now broadcast live while filmmakers, musicians and laudators were connected from their living rooms. According to its own statements, the German Film Academy had previously consulted intensively with Minister of State for Culture Grütters and ARD.
Actor Edin Hasanović hosted the evening . He had already moderated the German Film Prize 2018 together with the then President of the German Film Academy Iris Berben . The originally selected director Sherry Hormann continued to be the artistic director . In order not to endanger the production employees, the preparations for the 70th award should take place entirely in the home office . The ARD co-production came about under the leadership of Rundfunks Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb).
Announcement of the honorary award winner
The first award winner was announced on March 5, 2020: the director, author and producer Edgar Reitz will receive the honorary award for outstanding services to German film. Ulrich Matthes , President of the German Film Academy, commented on the selection committee's decision: “Edgar Reitz invented unforgettable poetic people and images , especially with his " Heimat " films. They shine far beyond themselves and their microcosm. And he has shown that the charged word “home” is too complex to be left to right-wing nationalists “.

Films submitted
The 27 fiction, 15 documentary and 8 children's films were submitted in October 2019 and assessed by three different pre-selection committees (feature film: 18 members, documentary film: 11, children's film: 10). The aim was to include films in the preselection which, as a complete work or based on outstanding individual achievements, have a chance of receiving nominations and prizes. The pre-selected fiction and children's films were announced on January 7, 2020, the documentaries had already been released on December 16, 2019. Schoolchildren of various ages who were enthusiastic about films were again invited to the screenings of the children's films, and their judgments were included in the later decision-making process.
The 2,000 members of the German Film Academy voted on the regular nominations in 17 categories by online viewing until March 2020 or were able to watch the films in the cinema at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival in the LOLA at Berlinale series (February 22-29, 2020) .
