Helena Zengel (born June 10, 2008 in Berlin ) is a German actress .

Life

Helena Zengel lives in Berlin and began acting at the age of five in a music video for the Berlin alternative band Abby . She got her first leading role in a feature film at the age of eight in the film drama The Daughter of Mascha Schilinski from 2017. Zengel can also be seen in two episodes of the television series The Specialists - In the Name of the Victims . In the feature film Systemsprenger by Nora Fingscheidt , which premiered at the Berlinale in February 2019 , Zengel plays the behavioral nine-year-old Benni . For her portrayal, Zengel was awarded the German Film Prize for Best Actress in 2020 .

After the success of Systemsprenger , which also won a number of international awards, Zengel was hired by director Paul Greengrass for the English-language Universal Pictures - Western News of the World . In the film adaptation of the novel of the same name by the American writer Paulette Jiles , she embodies the ten-year-old Johanna Leonberger at the side of Tom Hanks .
