My end. Your beginning. is a film drama by Mariko Minoguchi , which premiered on June 30, 2019 as part of the Munich Film Festival and was released in German cinemas on November 28, 2019.

action

When Nora and Aron met in the subway on a rainy day, it was love at first sight. Aron believed in a predetermined meeting for them. They have been together for two years and are still very much in love. When the young couple get caught in a bank robbery, Aron is accidentally shot by one of the perpetrators. He dies in Nora's arms.

In the following days she tries to numb her pain and spends the night with a stranger named Natan who, like herself, had wandered the streets at night. He has just learned that his daughter Ava has leukemia and needs very expensive treatment. Because he lost his job as a night watchman in the supermarket, he had to accept a suggestion from his childhood friend to get some money.

In the meantime, while the police work to solve the mystery behind the robbery, a relationship slowly develops between the two lost souls.

production

At my end. Your beginning. it is the feature film debut of Mariko Minoguchi as a director, who also wrote the script, which she provided with time leaps. Minoguchi named her brother as the main source of inspiration for the film, who is a physicist and, among other things, also dealt with the theory of relativity and quantum theory. Hence the worldwide, English-language title of the film is Relativity . The question of chance and fate dominated my end. Your beginning. consequently from the first to the last scene, notes film critic Antje Wessels . Minoguchi does not work with such drastic visual stylistic devices as her colleague Noé, but just like him, she also grasped the importance of directorial experimentation, so Wessels continues, which means that the storyline around Nora's one-night stand Natan almost fades into the background at times , because you are only well into the second half of Mein Ende. Your beginning. begins to understand the enormous importance of Natan's entry into Nora's life.

The film received production funding of 400,000 euros from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media and 268,000 euros from the German Film Funding Fund . The FilmFernsehFonds Bayern also granted young talent funding of 250,000 euros for the debut film.

Saskia Rosendahl took over the role of Nora, Julius Feldmeier plays her friend Aron and Edin Hasanović plays the stranger Natan. Leonard Kunz plays Max, Natan's childhood friend.

The shooting took place between March 27 and May 17, 2018 in Munich .

A first screening took place on June 30, 2019, also in Munich at the local film festival . He was then presented at the London Film Festival and the Warsaw Film Festival . The film was released in German cinemas on November 28, 2019. In January 2020 it was shown at the Göteborg Film Festival .

Reviews

Frédéric Jaeger from Spiegel Online writes that Mariko Minoguchi exaggerates the strange and the strange in her film, which makes it a romantic narrative of epic proportions: “ My end. Your beginning. is a work that trusts very much that the cinema can be used as an affect space and that there are mechanisms for it. "

In his review, Fabien Lemercier from the online film magazine Cineuropa highlights the extremely cautious script and the editing in Minoguchi's concept film as the greatest strengths. The film carefully unfolds its plot based on the model of Schrödinger's cat , a thought experiment from quantum physics, in which it assumes the simultaneity of two states, dead and alive, until one of these possibilities becomes increasingly logical. Even if the film overall does not reach the same artistic level as David Lynch's Mulholland Drive , for Lemercier a reference film, in the narrative of which time is also manipulated, and the viewer can also guess fairly quickly how the two stories are connected, fulfills Minoguchis Feature film debut his conceptual goals to perfection, which testifies to the promising maturity of this young filmmaker.

The film critic Antje Wessels writes that in addition to a partially established ensemble, the stage in Mein Ende belongs . Your beginning. entirely to the wonderfully unpretentious acting, completely at the service of their emotionally charged roles, actors Saskia Rosendahl , Julius Feldmeier and Edin Hasanović . Even if they are never seen together on screen, they complement each other perfectly.
