Harold Bushnell Sallada ( January 23, 1895 - April 25, 1977 ) was an American admiral in the United States Navy and a naval pilot. During the Pacific War , he commanded aircraft carrier formations in several battles.

Life

He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1917. From March 1941 he was commanding officer of the aircraft mother ship USS Albemarle (AV-5) . On August 23, 1942, Sallada was promoted to sea captain and appointed director of the planning division of the Navy's Bureau of Aeronautics . From June 1944, Rear Admiral Sallada was in command of Carrier Division 26 . From July 24 to August 1, 1944 he was in command of Task Group 52.14 with the carriers USS Midway (CVE-63) , USS Nehenta Bay (CVE-74) , USS Gambier Bay (CVE-73) , USS Kitkun Bay (CVE- 71) and USS White Plains (CVE-66) in the Battle of Tinian . He later became commander of Carrier Division 6 from July 1944 . From June 1, 1945 to 1947, Sallada was head of the Bureau of Aeronautics and during this time was significantly involved in the development of aircraft carriers with sloping decks. in January 1948, Vice Admiral Sallada became Commander of the Naval Air Force, Pacific . After retiring in October 1949, he was promoted to four-star admiral.

He has been described as an intelligent, aggressive officer with high administrative competence.

He has received numerous medals, including the Legion of Merit .
