Gabriela Maria Schmeide ( Upper Sorbian Gabriela Marija Šmajdźina ; born July 10, 1965 in Bautzen as Gabriela Kubitz or Kubicec ) is a German - Sorbian actress .

life and work

Gabriela Maria Kubitz grew up bilingually in Bautzen as the daughter of Sorbian parents . After high school she wanted Medicine study, but her in the GDR was denied because her father fled to the West was. Instead, she worked at the German-Sorbian People's Theater in Bautzen as a prompter and got into acting.

From 1984 she first completed her vocal and violin training, and then from 1987 to 1991 she studied drama at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin.

She then got an engagement at the Berliner Ensemble . In 1992 she was named Young Actress of the Year by Theater heute magazine ; two years later she received the sponsorship award of the Akademie der Künste . She has been a member of the Theater Bremen ensemble since 1994 , first with a permanent commitment and then as a freelance actress. In Bremen she played Blanche in Endstation Sehnsucht and Lady Macbeth under directors such as Andrej Woron and Karin Henkel . Chanson evenings are also part of her repertoire.

She has played in film and television productions since 2000 and has become known to audiences outside the theater. She had her first film role in 2001 in the film Die Polizistin by Andreas Dresen , in which she embodies the title character. A year later, she took part in Dresen's film Half Staircase , which, like Die Polizistin, won several film awards. She has also been featured in various TV productions since then, including some Tatorte and the series Das Kanzleramt .

Her engagement at Theater Bremen ended with the end of the 2008/2009 season. Since the 2009/2010 season she has been a permanent member of the Thalia Theater in Hamburg .

2020 Schmeide received for her supporting role as a social worker woman Bafané in Nora Fing Scheidt movie system Sprenger (2019) the German Film Prize .

Gabriela Maria Schmeide is married and has one daughter.
