Nathan Englander (born 1970 in New York City ) is an American writer.

Life

Englander grew up in West Hempstead in the US state of New York in an Orthodox Jewish environment. He later attended Binghamton University , New York. In the 1990s he worked as a photographer and filmmaker. Later he concentrated entirely on writing.

He publishes short stories in the US magazines The New Yorker and Atlantic Monthly, among others . Three of his stories have been included in the annual selection anthology " The Best American Short Stories ". "The Gilgul of Park Avenue" was published in the 2000 issue under guest editor EL Doctorow and "How We Avenged the Blums" came in the 2006 annual volume under guest editor Ann Patchett .

In 2000 his collection of short stories, For the Relief of Unbearable Desires , came out. It earned him a lot of attention, international translations and generous production conditions for his next work. After extensive research, his first novel, The Ministry for Special Cases , was published in 2008 . The story takes place in Buenos Aires and deals with the " disappearance " of 30,000 opponents of the Argentine military dictatorship (1976–1983) and their consequences up to the present day. The subtext of the book is the investigation of the collective memory in a country where the historical events have not yet really been processed and thus could not be digested into a "past".

Englander lives in New York. In autumn 2009 he was Mary Ellen from the Heyden Fellow for Fiction at the American Academy in Berlin.
