Simon of Sina

Simon Georg Sina Freiherr von Hodos und Kisdia (born August 15, 1810 in Vienna ; † April 15, 1876 ibid), the son of Georg Simon Freiherr von Sina , was also a famous Austrian banker and entrepreneur. He studied philosophy and astronomy.

Life

He donated a large part of the family's fortune to the construction of educational institutions, such as the new building of the University of Vienna (started posthumously) and the Budapest Academy , as well as the establishment of the Athens Academy and the Athens Observatory . The Athens Cathedral and the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Vienna have also been donated by Sina (and his father).

In Carnival 1858 which was Hellenes Polka Op.203 by Johann Strauss Jr. premiered at Vienna's Palais Sina.

His name is the Sinawarte, a lookout point on the Hohen Lindkogel in the Vienna Woods , which he had built in 1856.

The Sinas crater of the moon was named after him.
