The Hohe Lindkogel , also known as the Iron Gate or Cold Mountain , is 834  m above sea level. A. high excursion mountain in the southern Vienna Woods and west of Baden near Vienna , in the municipality of Alland and Bad Vöslau .

Location and landscape

Due to its height and extent, the Hohe Lindkogel dominates the eastern edge of the Vienna Woods between Baden near Vienna and Bad Vöslau . Extensive pine forests cover its broad flanks.

At the summit is the Eisernes Tor shelter of the Austrian Tourist Club with the Sina-Warte observation tower built in 1856 .

About the name

According to a legend, the name "Iron Gate" comes from an "iron door" attached to "the highest tree on the summit", behind which there was, secured, an image of a saint and "to which pilgrimages went"

Sina wait

The banker Simon Freiherr von Sina , who owned the Fahrafeld estate on the Lindkogel, had the 14-meter-high tower built and a year later donated it to the city of Baden's beautification committee with the obligation to keep it open to the public. Archduke Albrecht , who had paths to the Hohen Lindkogel built and in whose honor the summit area was named "Albrechtshöhe", declared himself ready to assume the costs of maintaining the observation tower. The associated designation of the building as "Albrechtsturm" has historically not been able to establish itself permanently.

The Sina-Warte bears the inscription:

"For the pleasure of the public"

Iron gate shelter

The shelter located on the summit of the Hoher Lindkogel and directly attached to the Sina-Warte is operated by the ÖTK , Baden section. With the exception of a several-week holiday ban in summer, the shelter is open all year round, with Monday being the day of rest as standard. Of the numerous climbs to the refuge, the greatest differences in altitude have to be overcome in those from the Helenental (around 560 meters in altitude).

history

In 1883, the plan of building a shelter, which had been pursued since 1878 and was difficult to implement due to the negative attitude of the landowners, became so concrete when the decision was made to connect the building to be built with the tower "by means of a smaller, low extension". The building negotiation took place on June 20, 1883; the shell of the iron gate shelter was completed in 1883, the interior work followed in 1884, and on August 3, 1884 the shelter was ceremoniously opened with the participation of over 700 people.

In 1897 there was a plan to build a route from the tram line leading from Baden to Vöslau , branching off in the area of the Goldeck stop , "over the forest devotion to the Iron Gate".

In 1904, the by then was largest expansion of the protected building (the opening instead of additions on 13 November 1904) and 1929 a tenant change.

Raisenmarkt-Lindkogel transmitter

About 150 m north-west of the summit is the Raisenmarkt-Lindkogel transmitter, which is operated by Österreichische Rundfunksender GmbH & Co KG (ORS) . Among other things, it supplies the towns of Alland , Heiligenkreuz and Gaaden with the programs of Austrian radio .

Roads, paths, slopes

In the first quarter of the 20th century, the city of Baden, together with the Baden section of the German and Austrian Alpine Association ( DÖAV ), cleared the area in favor of a ski run that subsequently lasted for decades. In the mid-1930s, a new, 600-meter-long descent was laid from the highest point on the north side, ending in the Helenental south of the village of Sattelbach ; A post bus service was offered to reach Baden's southern railway station , which is ten kilometers away .

The growing popularity of motorcycles and cars can be attributed to their conquest of the Iron Gate in 1929.

In winter, the access road to the shelter is often used as a groomed toboggan run. The hike on the forest road takes about 1 to 2 hours, the descent by sledge 15 to 30 minutes.

The Brennersteig is a secured rock passage and offers hikers and trekkers an alpine environment in the Vienna Woods. Furthermore, two official mountain bike routes lead to the Iron Gate .
