The village has almost 50 buildings with around 140 residents. history
The place is mentioned as Murlingen as early as 1136 and was probably founded by Stift Heiligenkreuz . The family of those at Murlingen probably went out again at the end of the 12th century. The country estate fell back to the monastery, which ran the estate for over 700 years.
A church dedicated to St. Laurentius, which was integrated into today's palace complex.
A tragedy made the place world famous and the destination of many tourists interested in culture: On January 30, 1889, Crown Prince Rudolf and his lover Mary Vetsera died of suicide in the hunting lodge at the time . After there was previously only a small memorial, a visitor center was inaugurated in October 2014. As the foundation for maintaining the convent ceased to exist due to the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy, the nuns are dependent on the income from the memorial.
Anyone exploring the hill between Mayerling and Preinsfeld will come across a sign on a forest path with the inscription: "... unknown soldiers died here in the last days of the war in 1945 ..."
