Although she was not guilty of anything, a young woman, Antonia Berger, was banished to the Soviet gulag after a five-minute trial . In 1952 she returned to the German Democratic Republic with her seriously ill 11-year-old daughter . Antonia gets an apartment, start-up capital and a good job. However, she has to sign a confidentiality agreement regarding her previous history. It will turn out to be a heavy price to pay.

The family story of the actress Swetlana Schönfeld , who plays Antonia's mother in the film, was the inspiration for the script.
