Thomas Plenert

Thomas Plenert (born February 1, 1951 in Nauen ) is a German cameraman .

Life

Plenert studied camera at the GDR Academy of Film and Television in Babelsberg and the State Film and Theater Academy in Łódź . He made a name for himself as a documentary cameraman during the GDR era and has been working with renowned directors such as Rainer Ackermann and Jürgen Böttcher since the late 1970s . In collaboration with Böttcher, documentaries such as Rangierer (1984), Short Visit to Hermann Glöckner (1985) and The Wall (1990), which won the FIPRESCI Prize in the forum of the Berlinale in 1991 , were made.

Plenert's collaboration with Volker Koepp , for whom he has been behind the camera in almost all films since 1988, is particularly fruitful . The award-winning documentaries by Koepp and Plenert include Die Wismut (1993), which received the German Film Critics' Prize for Best Documentary Film in 1994 , and Mr. Zwilling and Ms. Zuckermann (1998), who won the Grand Prize at the Visions du Réel documentary film festival in 1999 Nyon and was nominated for the German Film Prize as best documentary film. For Koepps Kalte Heimat , Plenert received the gold film for best camera in 1995 .

In addition to his documentary work, Plenert also occasionally makes feature films. For his first feature film, Die Beunruhigung , shot under Lothar Warneke's direction in black and white , Plenert won the award for best camera at the 2nd GDR National Feature Film Festival in 1982 . He later made films with directors such as Jan Schütte ( Fette Welt , 1998) and Bernd Böhlich ( You are not alone , 2007) as well as individual episodes of television series such as Polizeiruf 110 , Die Kommissarin , In the Name of the Law and Stubbe - From Case to Case . In 2006 Plenert won the Adolf Grimme Prize for the rbb - Police Call Kleine Frau (together with director Andreas Kleinert , screenwriter Stefan Rogall and the actresses Imogen Kogge and Johanna Gastdorf ) . In 2008 he received the DEFA Foundation Prize for the Promotion of German Film Art.

Since 1997, Plenert has been a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts , Film and Media Art section.

Plenert is married to the editor Gudrun Steinbrück-Plenert .
