action

A prefabricated housing estate in the east of Berlin . Mr. and Mrs. Moll have been unemployed for years. Mr. Moll is a master painter and Ms. Moll is a butcher. When Ms. Moll gets a new job as a security guard, the couple's life changes. She is given a uniform and has to take a preparatory course. Mr. Moll is busy painting the balcony partition to the neighboring balcony. The German-Russian Jewgenia Lehmann moves into this neighboring apartment with her father and daughter Tonka. Son Svenni Moll tries to get in touch with the girl, but she behaves repulsively. Father Moll has it a little easier. He is encouraged by his wife to help the neighborhood and falls in love with Jewgenia. The dreary everyday life apparently still has adventure in store for him. He climbs into the story without his wife noticing anything and without realizing that Yevgenia welcomes neighborhood help, but nothing more than that.

Another new neighbor of the Molls is Kurt Wellinek. Unemployment drove the physicist into alcohol and ultimately led to his separation from his wife Sylvia. Sylvia is a former actress who is now trying to get back to work. She gets her first job as a voice actress. The director gives her hopes for a role in a television series. Allegedly a plump woman is wanted. Sylvia prepares herself for the casting with pillows and several layers of clothing and then learns that the scriptwriters have changed the role and are now looking for an anorexic . The disappointments in the world of work slowly lead you back to Kurt and let you understand his problems better, as he suffers even more from his inaction. In the neighborhood she sticks little notes on lanterns with the announcement of free tuition in math and physics. Kurt thus receives a purpose in life again.

Meanwhile, Ms. Moll also has to realize that her work is not as important as a company trainer tried to convince the long-term unemployed. At night she guards an empty tennis hall that is only filled with air. Her marriage also seems to be a bubble and she realizes how her husband feels about Yevgenia. Mr. Moll has to realize that his blossoming is not permanent. He decides to travel to Holland because painters are wanted there.

background

The shooting of the film took place from June 19 to July 22 in Berlin-Marzahn, during the soccer world championship 2006 , which is why cars with German flags can be seen again and again in the streets, but otherwise not featured in the film play. The premiere took place on May 1st, 2007 at the Filmkunstfest in Schwerin . It opened in theaters on July 19, 2007.

The title You are not alone comes from the hit song of the same name by Roy Black from 1965. Axel Prahl sings the title at the opening party of the new neighbor Jewgenia. The song was released as a single at the premiere of the film. It is Axel Prahl's first release as a singer.

The composer of the music for this film, Jakob Ilja, is the guitarist of the band Element of Crime . The trumpet of Sven Regener , the lead singer of the band, can therefore also be heard unmistakably .

Reviews

  • epd-film (No. 7/2007): “It is the second feature film by the experienced television director Böhlich. The locations in the east of Berlin and the people with GDR history are reminiscent of films such as ' Half Staircase ' or ' Summer in front of the balcony ' by director Andreas Dresen . He, too, combines the optimism and the comical heightening of the characters with an accurate representation of reality. The films also have the actor Axel Prahl in common, who plays a little man from the East again, a clumsy lover for whom things get too much. Prahl gives this minor a tragic-comic weight and even makes some folly appear amusing. The other actors are also excellent: Katharina Thalbach as Molls patente, wife blinded by her new importance or Herbert Knaup as a depressive-aggressive academic, Karoline Eichhorn, the Russian Katerina Medvedeva as well as Mathieu Carrière and Dominique Horwitz in supporting roles. In addition to many funny scenes, the ensemble succeeds in some extraordinary moments, for example when Moll dances with Yevgenia and only his gaze tells of the earthquake that is taking place in him. "
  • Lexicon of the international film : “A summer tragic comedy full of sympathy for the losers, whom the film is looking for ways out of their loneliness and who dare to venture into new beginnings. The film, carried by strong actors, looks, gestures and subtle nuances, does not succumb to the sentimental allure of its subject, but retains its life-affirming tone even in the lowlands of existence. "

Awards

Herbert Knaup was nominated for the German Film Prize 2008 for the supporting role of Kurt Wellinek . You are not alone was nominated for the Adolf Grimme Prize 2010 in the fiction category.
