action

The friends Katrin and Nike, both over thirty, live in the same old apartment building in Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin . Katrin, who moved from Freiburg , is unemployed and a single mother of one son. Nike is a trained seamstress, but works as a mobile geriatric nurse. Both get to know the truck driver Ronald when he almost ran over Katrin. After a night of love with Nike, Ronald moves in with her. This makes Katrin feel left alone by her friend. She tries to numb her unemployment and loneliness with alcohol. After a disco evening, Katrin's life situation escalates. She is admitted to psychiatry for alcohol abuse and receives support. In the meantime, Nike takes care of Katrin's son Max, who in turn has his first heartache . Nike's new relationship with Ronald is not going smoothly either. She learns that he is married and has three children from different women. When Katrin comes back from the hospital, he goes for her too. After one last night, Nike unceremoniously puts macho Ronald in front of the door. Then the friends find each other closer again and spend the summer evenings on Nike's balcony again. The final picture shows the house in autumn for renovation scaffolding and now uninhabited.

background

The film was filmed in the vicinity of the Helmholtzplatz in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg. The tenement house is on the southeast corner of the square. The bar scenes, however, were filmed further away in the “Esmarch-Eck” bar on Esmarchstrasse in Bötzowkiez . Axel Prahl makes a cameo as a pub guest. A pedestrian bridge over the S-Bahn near Schönhauser Allee , which Katrin's son is crossing, was already in the picture 25 years earlier in the film Solo Sunny by the same screenwriter Wolfgang Kohlhaase .

The soundtrack humorously sets numerous German hits like Guten Morgen, Sonnenschein by Nana Mouskouri , He Belongs to Me by Marianne Rosenberg and I love the life of Vicky Leandros .

With 967,767 moviegoers, summer in front of the balcony was 9th among the German-language productions that were released in 2006.

Reviews

“The all-round coherent melancholy comedy about love, friendship, solidarity, unemployment and loneliness unobtrusively conveys the issues raised and, despite the pensive mood, shows a subtle sense of the comic in everyday life. Convincing actors, the almost documentary look and the clever choice of music make the film an experience. "

“With a precise eye and great love for the characters, director Andreas Dresen filmed the story of two friends. They sit on the balcony between heaven and earth and look at the colorful, difficult existence in which the right men are often the wrong ones. "

Summer in front of the balcony is a social comedy that inspires, touches and downright delights the audience - something that can rarely be said about a film. This is due to the brilliant script by Solo Sunny author Wolfgang Kohlhaase, the refreshingly natural play of its leading actresses Nadja Uhl and Inka Friedrich and, in particular, Andreas Dresen's special ability to depict the little everyday life around the corner unfiltered and lifelike. With the greatest of ease, Dresen incorporates amateur actors into the plot, who become an indispensable part of the film and root it coherently in the respective milieus. This summer is a gift. Do not miss it. "

"Andreas Dresen is the lucky child among German directors: the critics like him, but so do the viewers."
