occupation

Gundermann is a biographical film and at the same time a music film by Andreas Dresen from 2018 about the songwriter Gerhard Gundermann . Laila Stieler wrote the script and Alexander Scheer played the leading role. The film was released in German cinemas on August 23, 2018. At the German Film Prize 2019 , Gundermann was the most successful competition entry with six awards (including Best Feature Film, Best Director and Best Actor).

action

Starting in 1992, the film shows selected episodes from the life of the songwriter and excavator driver, including the fact that Gundermann's work as an unofficial employee of the State Security became known . Based on this, flashbacks show how he got involved politically in the GDR and how he got together with his wife Conny. He gains inspiration for his songs while he is sitting in the driver's cab of a bucket wheel excavator and mining lignite in the Spreetal opencast mine near the city of Hoyerswerda . He records spontaneous linguistic text ideas for songs with an analog dictation machine. His life and his environment are shaped by contradictions: his work tears up the earth, at the same time he describes and sings about the beauties of nature. As a staunch communist, his directness and idiosyncrasy reached social limits. Through his work for the State Security, he hopes to be able to achieve improvements in occupational safety and working conditions, and only after the fall of the Wall realized how much he could have harmed other people. At the same time, he learns that he was also observed by friends for the State Security himself. His father broke off contact with him because he held his son responsible for his own misconduct. When Gundermann becomes a father himself, his wife finds it difficult to accept that he continues to invest so much time in his music and work.

production

Gundermann filming in the Nochten opencast mine

Laila Stieler started working on and preparing the script for the film in 2006. Conny Gundermann, the songwriter's widow, helped create the film. The music - 15 tracks produced by Jens Quandt - is performed by Gisbert zu Knyphausen's band , consisting of Gunnar Ennen (guitars, keyboard instruments), Jens Fricke (guitars), Frenzy Suhr (bass), Sebastian Deufel (drums, grand pianos) and as Guest was played by saxophonist Andreas Wieczorek (from the original line-up of Die Seilschaft ) and sung by the main actor Alexander Scheer .

The filming locations included the Nochten opencast mine and its daytime facilities in Mühlrose in the Lausitz lignite mining district , almost 20 kilometers east of Gundermann's former workplace. Some scenes were shot in Gelsenkirchen-Hassel .

reception

“Biographical film about the short and intense life of the excavator driver and songwriter Gerhard 'Gundi' Gundermann (1955–1998), which in its cinematic-musical form conveys the character complexity of the artist as well as the contradictions of life in the GDR. The achronological, sometimes associative dramaturgy does not want to judge the stubborn free spirit, but rather allows itself to be touched by its inner conflict. An approach to a multi-layered person in a lost country, developed from everyday observations and congenially interpreted in the main role. "

“Gundermann was an artist as original as it was contradictory. The staunch socialist was kicked out of the party, spied for the Stasi and was himself monitored. Andreas Dresen's film 'Gundermann' does not place the rock poet on a pedestal, but exposes him to his past. The sensitive film doesn't gloss over anything, but works out very precisely and differentiated how attitudes arise. A clever, sincere and moving music film about a lived life with all its ideals, entanglements, disappointments. It is time for such films about the GDR. "
