Mr. Wichmann from the CDU

Mr. Wichmann from the third row is a documentary by the director Andreas Dresen . The film, released in 2012 , documents the everyday life of CDU MP Henryk Wichmann as a member of the Brandenburg State Parliament .

Emergence

After Wichmann became a member of the state parliament in 2009, Dresen had the idea of a continuation of his film Herr Wichmann from the CDU , which showed the politician before the 2002 federal election .

Dresen accompanied Wichmann during a parliamentary year on a total of 30 filming days in his work as a member of parliament. A 1½-hour selection of events was cut together from the 100 hours of filming material that resulted from this. In an interview, Dresen expressed great appreciation for Wichmann's regional political work:

"I'm not a CDU voter, but if someone like Wichmann were a candidate, he would definitely have a chance with me."

- Andreas Dresen : Leipziger Volkszeitung from September 6, 2012, p. 27

The world premiere of the film, co-produced by Peter Rommel (Rommel Film) and Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg (rbb), took place on February 12, 2012 in the Berliner Kino International in the Panorama section of the 62nd Berlinale . The German theatrical release was on September 6, 2012.

content

After Henryk Wichmann did not win the direct mandate in the state elections on September 27, 2009 , he became a candidate for replacement on November 1, 2009 as a member of the Brandenburg state parliament. Wichmann's work in parliament and at the grassroots level is documented for a year in a tragicomic documentary film about the reality of politics and democracy. The film begins with the birthday congratulations for Henryk Wichmann brought by the CDU parliamentary group and ends a year later with the congratulations on his birthday.

The film shows, among other things, political education in schools, unclear responsibilities in train traffic and considerations in environmental protection. In addition, Wichmann's relationship to the other state parliament parties and the state government is shown by Matthias Platzeck .

Reviews

“Dramatic and humorous, the film examines the functioning of German politics at the grassroots level and especially the relationship between citizens and the political class. Not only is the MP portrayed, but also indirectly a critical mirror is held up to the citizens. "

"The film, built with great narrative sovereignty, proves, like all of Dresen's previous oeuvre, that the boundary between documentary and feature film is fluid."

- Jens Hinrichsen : film service

“If you want to see a really great documentary about German politics, you have to watch the new work by Andreas Dresen: 'Mr Wichmann from the third row' […]. Andreas Dresen is to German film what Muhammad Ali was to boxing. "

“Dresen is always very close to Wichmann with his camera and always accompanies him respectfully without commenting. [...] This film reveals more about politics than any political report. "

- FBW press release

“The documentary 'Herr Wichmann from the third row' is a great film about the troubles of the plain. In the end, you understand how complicated democracy is. "

- Claudia Palma : Leipziger Volkszeitung

“Director Andreas Dresen follows the politician with the camera at every turn, without commenting or asking questions. What the clip-on microphone does not register is left out. The way he works is similar to that of his feature films, often recognized for their documentary view - his stylistic devices, the movable hand-held camera and the lack of a fixed script give the actors all the freedom they need. [...] This ambivalence between authenticity and the role of a politician makes the film a highly interesting political lesson. "

- Philipp Bühler : kinofenster.de

"The documentation is [...] a lesson about the influence of the individual on big politics."

- Philipp Holstein : Rheinische Post

Awards

The film received the audience award in the documentary film competition at the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Film Festival in 2012 in Schwerin. He was awarded the title valuable by the German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) .
