She is an alteration seamstress and he is a retired teacher who has made the "railroad" a hobby. When Inge changes a pair of pants for the even older Karl (76), she starts an affair with him. At first she fights against it because she doesn't want to put her marriage at risk, but she is powerless against her feelings. After she confided in her daughter Petra (Werner's stepdaughter) and got advice from her not to say anything to Werner, Inge finally confesses her new love. It comes to an argument and she moves in with Karl. After a family celebration together, the couple go together for a while and remember what they shared. Inge later separates from Werner, who seems to be able to cope with it. One night she receives a call from Petra, who tells her that Werner killed himself. After the funeral Inge lives with Karl.

background

The German Press Agency (dpa) over expressed Dresen: "It bored me that society is getting older, but there is not the corresponding pictures - love and sex hear a certain age seem to exist."

The title is derived from the expression Cloud Nine , the English equivalent of the German saying "being on cloud nine ". There is also a song of the same name by the US singing group The Temptations , but in an interview with the Hamburger Abendblatt , Andreas Dresen explicitly refers to the song Nobody loves you (When You're Down And Out) by John Lennon , which contains the lyrics “ Nobody knows you when you're on cloud nine "contains. According to Dresen, the film title “ Cloud 9” expresses “both the size of the feeling and the greater height of the fall.” The film itself, on the other hand, does almost entirely without film music.

In 2008 the film came out together with Tom Schreiber's Dr. Inglés , Doris Dörries Cherry Blossoms - Hanami and Dennis Gansels The wave on the shortlist to be nominated as a German applicant for the Oscar abroad , was left behind compared to Uli Edels Der Baader Meinhof Complex .

Reviews

At its premiere in Cannes , the film was enthusiastically received, with ten minutes of standing ovation . The Süddeutsche Zeitung calls cloud 9 a “courageous and moving film” that tells “a passionate and tragic love story between old people in Berlin”.

According to the lexicon of international films , Cloud 9 is “a masterpiece that is as radical as it is poignant, with excellent actors who approach the taboo subject of sex in old age with great naturalness, without shyness or inhibitions. Above all, however, the quiet, intimate moments, the sincere dialogues that were improvised from the respective situation, and the reserved humor are impressive. "

Christina Krisch writes in the Kronen Zeitung that the film shows that lovesickness is not a teenage disease. Anyone who knows how to sensually enjoy the moment in the knowledge of their own finiteness and locks false shame in the bed drawer would also embrace late happiness - without any genius.

According to Georg Seeßlen , “the film cloud 9 [...] also lives from the close observation of things. Every detail on a breakfast table tells its story. A wallpaper seems to change its expression itself with the change in the feelings of the people in front of it, a coffee machine that sounded like a reliable everyday order suddenly makes angry, almost unbearable emotional music. "

The film ran at the Cannes Film Festival in the side series Un Certain Regard and won the Coup de Cœur Prize there.
