Dr. Alemán is a feature film by the German director Tom Schreiber from 2008 . The film drama, produced by 2Pilots Filmproduction , tells the story of a German medical student (played by August Diehl ) who spends his practical year in the Colombian city of Cali and is increasingly attracted by the street violence there.

The 26-year-old medical student Marc travels to Colombia after completing his studies to do a year of practical training as a doctor. He finally ends up in the city of Santiago de Cali , where on his first day of work in the operating room he already feels that violence by rival gangs is omnipresent. His host family tries to protect him, but the reality of the Colombian city keeps catching up with him in the form of drugs and crime. Soon afterwards he met the kiosk owner Wanda and plunged headlong into the maelstrom of the Favela Siloé.
In the further course he befriends some young people - including the clever Pavito - who supply him with cocaine and - as it turns out later - also protect him from violence in the slums. At the same time, he goes on a confrontational course with the doctors in the clinic in Cali - who live in isolated residential complexes and have never seen the Siloé, and accuse them of ignorance and ignorance. After his devout host family - fueled by the jealous daughter - kicked him out, Marc finally moved into the Siloé.
Marc starts an affair with Wanda and shows solidarity with the poor. This culminates in the fact that he is a killer - who later turns out to be the drug lord El Juez - who gains access to the hospital, lets escape and also covers up from the police.
It becomes clear that El Juez controls the poor district with brutal violence and is therefore feared and despised by the young people in the Siloé. Pavito tells Marc that he has to decide which side he is on. Marc receives a message from El Juez who wants to meet with him. At this meeting he offers Marc to work for him; at the same time, El Juez's wife Belinda begins to flirt with Marc. El Juez refers to a common utopia that would unite him and Marc: Marc would heal people and he himself would heal society (how he does this is not explained in detail). He describes the youth of the Siloé as scraps; one of them even tried to kill him.
This youth turns out to be Pavito, who is shot dead in the hospital. With this impression, Marc later refuses to treat a seriously injured member of El Juez Gang. His chief doctor sees this as a violation of the Hippocratic oath and throws him out. Marc now also identifies El Juez as the killer from the hospital with the police.
In the meantime, Wanda got on El Juez's hit list through Marc, who got wind of Marc's action. She leaves the siloé. For their part, the youngsters learned of Marc's meeting with El Juez, suspected him to be a traitor and beat him up. The demoralized Marc then gets a firearm from a doctor colleague and orders El Juez to a hotel by the hour. Instead, his wife Belinda appears there, who wants to have sex with Marc. He is not averse at first, they kiss. But then he thinks of a better one, he orders Belinda El Juez to summon, which she does.
After some waiting, El Juez storms in with Wanda as a hostage, shoots her immediately and threatens Marc, who is completely taken by surprise. El Juez, however, lets him live and moves out with Belinda. Marc looks at dead Wanda and draws his gun. He runs after them and points the gun at them.
The hour hotel can be seen from the outside, while several shots are fired inside. In the next shot, the blood-smeared Marc sits on the police headquarters and receives his German passport back. Apparently he's free to go.

The feature film celebrated its world premiere on July 8, 2008 at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival and opened in German cinemas on August 14, 2008. The specialist press had mixed comments about Tom Schreiber's film.
Alexandra Wach ( film-dienst ) remarked that the character of Marc was "a dream role for August Diehl", which the actor had visibly taken away. But one cannot understand the motivation why Marc joins “a milieu with no prospects and a lack of education to which he does not belong”. Director Tom Schreiber tells the "fatalistic story of a derailment with a lot of sense for details, with a feeling for the contrasts between the first and the 'third world' and with the irrepressible wish that the pictures should not lie." This circumstance also fell to Moritz Gathmann ( Der Tagesspiegel ) on: "The further Marc gets entangled, the further he 'goes abroad', the more implausible he becomes, the more he seems to be a slave to a scriptwriter who wants to hunt him to ruin." The episode with the drug lord can no longer be taken seriously and ultimately robs the film of its credibility. August Diehl would mime "the naive affluent child with a missionary will" too "penetrating". Martina Knoben ( Süddeutsche Zeitung ) judged that “the gangster and gang war part of the film does not go beyond clichés”, “while the exploration of a very German mood, a not harmless mixture of naive idealism, self-pity and thirst for adventure, surprisingly truly succeeds” . It is not clear whether the film adopts the perspective of its main actor “when it shows poverty and violence in picturesque and drastic images”, or whether it primarily exploits these images. The “cockiness of the film, the intrusive soundtrack and its lack of humor” would fit the topic, but would “stand in the way of self-awareness”.
Christian Buß ( Spiegel Online ) was far more positive . Dr. Aléman is a "terrific honest film about a failed rapprochement". The drive of the “radical tourist” (August Diehl) is only hinted at, but the film outlines the failure of its hero without denouncing his “twisted idealism”. Bert Rebhandl ( Berliner Zeitung ) remarked that the film almost looked like a “neorealistic street film”, “with amateur actors and perfectly cast characters”. Director Tom Schreiber follows "Dramaturgy of classic big city films"; "important problems of the exotic would be brought to the point: in a foreign country apparently no morality, the German, who is in truth the foreigner, involuntarily becomes a monster." Wilfried Hippen ( the daily newspaper ) compared the figure of Marc with the antihero from Graham Greene's novels . August Diehl seems, as always, "a little distant and arrogant", which would benefit his role very much. "His (Diehls') Dr. Aleman is also always a spoiled boy, and as a viewer you get an irritating, ambivalent relationship with him, which gives the film its own restlessness, which may make it appear more interesting than it actually is, ”says Hippen. However, director Schreiber lacks "the exact eye for the details" that local filmmakers would have had. Hippen also criticized the German dubbing of the film, which "breaks a lot".
Daniel Kothenschulte ( Frankfurter Rundschau ) praised the film, which shows German cinema "in a new direction" away from home films . "Away from the bourgeois generational dramas in the east German provinces, towards a real internationality." The camera work is first class, while August Diehl is very well cast by the director. “The always good August Diehl is best when a role lifts him out of the ensemble. Since his beginnings in Hans-Christian Schmids 23 he has developed a charisma that takes him a long way from normalcy. That is an opportunity and a burden at the same time, ”says Kothenschulte.
Awards
The screenplay by Oliver Keidel won the 2006 German Screenplay Award . The film was also a competition entry at the A Film Festival in Karlovy Vary in July 2008.
Marleyda Soto won the award for best female leading actress at the Viña del Mar Film Festival in Chile.
In 2008, the film, together with Doris Dörries Kirschblüten - Hanami , Dennis Gansels Die Welle and Andreas Dresen's Cloud Neun , was shortlisted as a German candidate for an Oscar abroad , but it was left behind compared to Uli Edel's Der Baader Meinhof complex .
In 2009, the film editor was Andreas Wodraschke with the price of the German Film Critics Award.

The film is based on the story of a friend of director Tom Schreiber, who himself went to Colombia as a doctor and kept in touch with the writer.
The cast consisted of professional and amateur actors to ensure the greatest possible authenticity. For this purpose, drama workshops lasting several weeks were held with young people from the problematic Siloé district.
The television premiere of Dr. Alemán was on July 19, 2010 at 10:45 p.m. on ARD (Das Erste).
