Beyond Kleinwanzleben is a DDR - documentary by director Andreas Dresen . The film, produced by the University of Film and Television "Konrad Wolf" together with the television of the GDR , had its world premiere at the International Leipzig Documentary and Short Film Week for Cinema and Television in 1989.

content

The documentary film observes the everyday life of a socialist brigade from the GDR, which provides development aid south of the equator and trains young Africans in skilled trades.

Brigade leader Ronald, resident of the village of Klein Wanzleben , is delegated together with five other FDJ members to a “Brigade of Friendship” in Mashayamombe in Zimbabwe . The three young families go to Africa with their home furnishings. The clash of two cultures from different worlds and the absurdities of everyday life hold a certain comedy in them.

Emergence

The film was commissioned by the Central Council of the Free German Youth (FDJ). Andreas Dresen shot it as a student at the Konrad Wolf University of Film and Television in 16 mm format. However, since the client was not satisfied with the ironic undertone of the film, further work on the film seemed to be called into question. The film could only be completed with the help of Lothar Bisky , the rector of Dresden .

Reviews

"The [...] unmasking of the horror world of crocheted lace doilies, tidy table manners and sofa cushions disciplined with the edge of the hand makes the film a bitter farce and Andreas Dresen the John Waters of Potsdam."

- Sabine Reeh : The press

"Anyone who wants to know how the GDR was on a small scale should watch this film, it includes the republic in Bernstein."

- Frank Junghänel : Berliner Zeitung

DVD release

The film was published in 2007 by Filmgalerie 451 and the film magazine Schnitt in the debut film series on the double DVD Stilles Land under “Extras”.
