Ulrich Markurth (born October 17, 1956 in Braunschweig ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and qualified pedagogue . He has been Lord Mayor of Braunschweig since July 1, 2014.

Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1975 at the Martino-Katharineum Braunschweig and doing community service at the Christian Youth Village Association Germany eV (CJD), Markurth studied educational science , psychology and sociology at the TU Braunschweig (diploma).

From 1984 to 1988 he was a research assistant at the German Bundestag in Bonn . At the same time, Markurth worked for nine years as a lecturer at the TU Braunschweig. From 1988 Markurth headed the AWO's psychotherapeutic children's home in Wolfshagen in the Harz region . In 1994 he returned to Braunschweig and was head of the section and department until 2005 and, from 2001, a managing board member of the AWO district association and was therefore responsible for all economic business areas.

Ulrich Markurth is the chairman of the supervisory board of the Städtisches Klinikum Braunschweig gGmbH , the Braunschweiger Versorgungs-Aktiengesellschaft & Co. KG and the Volkshochschule Braunschweig GmbH as well as a member of the supervisory board of NSI Consult Beratungs- und Servicegesellschaft GmbH and Eintracht Braunschweig GmbH & Co. KGaA.

Markurth is married and has two daughters.

While still at school, Markurth joined the SPD Braunschweig's local inner city club in 1972. In 1996 he was elected to the city council, where he was a member of the finance committee and the economic committee. Eleven years later, he was elected head of department for “Social Affairs, Health and Youth” and, from November of the same year, for the “School” division. On May 30, 2013 Markurth was appointed to the First City Council and at the same time Deputy Hoffmann with the required majority of the council with only two dissenting votes at the suggestion of the Lord Mayor Gert Hoffmann ( CDU ). At the SPD party congress at the end of 2013, Ulrich Markurth was finally elected as the top candidate for the mayoral elections with 98 percent of the delegate's votes.

Markurth was the SPD candidate for the mayor elections on May 25, 2014. In the runoff election on June 15, he was elected with 66.5 percent of the votes cast. He has been Lord Mayor of Braunschweig since July 1, 2014.
