Gerhard Glogowski

Gerhard Glogowski (born February 11, 1943 in Hanover ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 1990 to 1998 he was Lower Saxony's Minister of the Interior and from October 28, 1998 to December 15, 1999 Prime Minister of Lower Saxony .

Family and vocational training

Glogowski grew up in Bonn . His father was the chauffeur of the SPD politicians Herbert Wehner and Erich Ollenhauer . After attending primary school, Glogowski completed an apprenticeship as a toolmaker in Bonn . At the same time he attended evening school in order to obtain the Abitur. He then graduated from the Hamburg University of Economics and Politics with a degree in economics .

Political career

Glogowski has been a member of IG Metall since 1960 and a member of the SPD since 1961. He was district chairman of the SPD district of Braunschweig and deputy chairman of the Lower Saxony state association of the SPD.

He took over his first political office in 1966 as councilor of the former Waggum municipality ; from 1968 to 1972 he was chairman of the SPD parliamentary group there. In 1972 he was mayor of Waggum and from 1972 to 1974 he was also Member of Parliament and Deputy SPD parliamentary group in the council of the county Braunschweig . From 1976 to 1981 and from 1986 to 1990 Gerhard Glogowski served as honorary Lord Mayor of the city of Braunschweig.

In 1978 Glogowski was elected to the Lower Saxony state parliament, to which he was a member for six electoral terms from June 21, 1978 to March 4, 2003. From 1984 to 1990 he was deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group.

Glogowski was temporarily - in his capacity as Mayor of Braunschweig - President of the Lower Saxony City Council . He was also a member of the supervisory boards of Volkswagen AG , the Norddeutsche Landesbank , the public insurance company Braunschweig , the Stahlwerke Peine-Salzgitter , the Stadtwerke Braunschweig , the Niedersächsische Verfrachtungsgesellschaft, the Nord / LB and the Braunschweigischen Kohlen-Bergwerke , as well as the advisory board of Ferngas Salzgitter GmbH.

Minister of the Interior and Prime Minister of Lower Saxony

From June 21, 1990 to October 28, 1998, Gerhard Glogowski served as Lower Saxony's Minister of the Interior and Deputy Prime Minister Gerhard Schröder (SPD). During this time, critics in the state capital Hanover accused Glogowski of having above all had the interests of the city of Braunschweig in view.

Commitment to Eintracht Braunschweig

Gerhard Glogowski always stood up for the Braunschweig gymnastics and sports club Eintracht von 1895 e. V. ( Eintracht Braunschweig ). In the 1980s he played a major role in the decisions of the city of Braunschweig to preserve the club's stadium on Hamburger Strasse ( Eintracht Stadium ). As Lower Saxony's Minister of the Interior, he campaigned for the stadium to be expanded. The state of Lower Saxony finally granted a considerable amount of sports funding for the construction project. From 2000 to 2007 Glogowski was president of the association. In December 2007 he was made honorary president.

Honors

Gerhard Glogowski has been Honorary Senator of the Technical University of Braunschweig since December 1994 .

On December 18, 2007, after a controversial debate, the majority of the city council of Braunschweig decided to make Glogowski an honorary citizen of the city of Braunschweig . The appointment took place on Glogowski's 65th birthday on February 11, 2008.
