List of honorary citizens of Braunschweig
The city of Braunschweig has been granting honorary citizenship since 1838 . First of all, merchants and manufacturers were honored who had offered their goods at least one hundred times at one of the Braunschweig trade fairs . Over the decades, these requirements changed more to more general services to the city.
Since 1972, deceased honorary citizens from their 70th to 100th birthday have been honored every five years and on the occasion of the tenth and 25th anniversary of their death with a wreath-laying ceremony by the city of Braunschweig.
