The Golden Book of the City of Braunschweig was created in 1926 on the occasion of the visit of the second Reich President of the Weimar Republic , Paul von Hindenburg . The first volume was used until 1942, the second from 1951 to 1995. The current 3rd volume has been in use since 1995.

1st volume

The first entry is from October 15, 1926 and is from Paul von Hindenburg. The third entry of this volume, from 28/29. November 1928 comes from Albert Schweitzer, who later won the Nobel Peace Prize .

By resolution of the city council with effect from January 16, 1946, the entries of Hitler, Göring, Klagges and von Schirach were removed. At the same time they were stripped of their honorary citizenship . Since honorary citizenship is a personal right that automatically expires with the death of the respective person, Hitler and Rust explicitly waived the withdrawal and pointed out that both had already died before (and thus the honorary citizenship expired).

2nd volume

Volume 2 of the Golden Book was published on April 22, 1951, the first entry by the first Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany Theodor Heuss and his wife Elly Heuss-Knapp to the last entry on May 24, 1995 by Wahyu Hamijaya, Lord Mayor of the Indonesian city ​​of Bandung , a twin town of Braunschweig.

3rd volume

Volume 3 of the Golden Book has been in use since mid-1995. In it are u. a. the signatures of athletes like Uwe Seeler and Franz Beckenbauer , but also of the German record champions in American football , the New York Lions from Braunschweig. Politicians are u. a. represented by the Federal Presidents Johannes Rau and Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the Japanese Ambassador Takeshi Yagi .
