Friedrich Theodor Kohl

Friedrich Theodor Kohl (born July 14, 1922 in Halle ; † November 24, 2014 in Braunschweig ) was a German architect and CDU politician. He was councilor of the city of Braunschweig and has been its honorary citizen since 1993. He campaigned for the preservation and reconstruction of important buildings in the city. His special concern was the German-Israeli understanding.

life and work

Kohl took part in World War II as an officer. After being a British prisoner of war, he studied architecture at the TH Braunschweig from 1948 . After graduating as Dipl.-Ing. he worked as an architect in the church building department. He was an expert on building design and monument preservation. He was a member of the Braunschweig City Council from 1961 to 1991 with a four-year break. There he was active on the administrative committee, the council of elders and the planning committee. He chaired the Culture Committee for 18 years. Kohl campaigned for the preservation of the head building of the old station . He was instrumental in maintaining and rebuilding the Michaelishof , the Neustadtrathaus and the Villa von Bülow . He gave the impetus for the construction of the Small House of the State Theater, opened in 1996 on Magnitorwall . Kohl is one of the founding members of the Braunschweig Working Group of the German-Israeli Society . He chaired the working group and was appointed honorary chairman. For many years he was an honorary member of the board of the Max Jüdel Foundation .

He was married to the already deceased Jew Christa Kohl. The marriage has four children.

Honors

On April 24, 1985, Kohl received the ring of honor of the city of Braunschweig for his 20 years of activity as councilor. He was granted honorary citizenship of the city of Braunschweig on November 12, 1993. On the occasion of his 80th birthday, he was honored on July 16, 2002 with a reception by the city in Richmond Castle . Another reception of the city took place there on his 90th birthday on July 27, 2012. Kohl is honorary senator of the University of Fine Arts Braunschweig , which was founded by his initiative, and honorary curator of the Order of St. John . He is one of the founding members of the Louis Spohr Society , which was founded on April 5, 2011 and of which he was appointed Honorary President.
