Werner Steffens

Werner Steffens (born March 9, 1937 in Magdeburg ; † November 1, 2018 in Braunschweig ) was a German local politician ( SPD ), elementary and secondary school teacher and rector of the Echternstraße elementary school in Braunschweig. From 1990 to 2001 Steffens was honorary mayor of the city.

Life

Steffens joined the SPD in the Braunschweig sub-district in 1962 . In 1970 he moved into the city council of Braunschweig and was chairman of the SPD parliamentary group from 1977 to 1981. At the same time he was chairman of the planning committee of the city council of Braunschweig from 1974 to 1991.

In 1981 he was under the former CDU - Mayor Hartmut Scupin First Mayor of the City of Braunschweig. He held this post until 1986 and was then chairman of the SPD council group again until 1990.
