Walter Klöditz

Walter Klöditz (born December 7, 1911 in Großenhain ( Saxony ); † December 25, 1994 in Braunschweig ) was a German SPD politician and Lord Mayor of Braunschweig from 1972 to 1974.

life and work

The trained painter Klöditz joined the SPD in 1927. In 1930 he passed the journeyman's examination, later the master’s examination, and after having served in the war since 1939, he founded a painting company in Meißen, Saxony, in 1945 . In 1947 he went to Braunschweig, where he founded a new company.

Braunschweig Mayor

From 1956 to 1976 he was councilor of the city of Braunschweig and from 1964 to 1972 second mayor. On November 21, 1972, he was elected Lord Mayor of Braunschweig. He resigned the office on July 2, 1974 to the CDU politician Günter Jaenicke . From 1971 to 1989 Klöditz was district chairman of the Braunschweig workers' welfare organization .

During his term of office as Lord Mayor, the territorial reform of March 1, 1974 fell, with 22 places being incorporated into the city of Braunschweig after the Braunschweig district, which had existed since 1832, was dissolved on February 28, 1974. The city grew from 76.93 to 192.02 km² and from 218,663 to 270,609 inhabitants.

Klöditz died in Braunschweig in 1994.
